When Work Feels Chaotic, Take Back Your Power With Learning

When Work Feels Chaotic, Take Back Your Power With Learning When Work Feels Chaotic, Take Back Your Power With Learning The modern workplace can give even the most laid-back person a case of sensory overload. At any given time, emails arrive, notifications flash, devices buzz, coworkers chit-chat, and meeting reminders pop up. Its no wonder 70 percent of respondents to the Udemy In Depth 2018 Workplace Distraction Reportsaid theyre distracted. The steady stream of distractions is making people stressed, unmotivated, and frustrated. No mere annoyance, workplace distractions undermine confidence and performance, especially among younger employees.Workplace distraction has real consequences for employers, too. In addition to schwefelyperit productivity, lower engagement, and lower retention, distractions interfere with the next generations preparedness for future leadership roles.Twenty-two percent of millennials and Gen. Z workers dont feel theyre able to reach their potential, and 34 percent say they like their jobs less as a result of distractions. Many millennials are already in management, but they havent necessarily received training on what it takes to be a great manager - i.e., soft skills like leadership, team-building, and giving constructive feedback. Our research found that 69 percent of millennials spend two hours or more looking at their phones for personal activities during the workday, which makes it that much harder for them to develop those critical leadership skills and stay tuned into their teams needs.Across all age groups, 59 percent of workers agree that personal use of technology is more distracting than work tools. Were all new to this balancing act, manically responding to pings, notifications, and interruptions while trying desperately to carve out time for deep, focused work. According to our research, 70 percent of workers think training could help them cope with distractions, but 66 percent have never spoken to a manager about it. It is possible, based on my experience, theyre afraid of looking like theyre having trouble doing their jobs or are less capable than their peers.Asking for learning and development opportunities should be viewed as a good thing a signal an employee wants to keep getting better at their job. At a time of continuous, disruptive workplace transformation, companies that attract and hilfe avid upskillers will have a competitive edge. Besides, with a measurable gap between skills employees need and skills job candidates have, it makes a lot more sense to upskill the talent you already have than to get stuck in a costly cycle of constantly recruiting for new skills.Individuals can still grow and advance in their careers in uncertain times. Employers would be wise to support them along the way, lest those proactive upskillers take their talents to a different company, one that prioritizes learning and development.Never Stop LearningWhen people embrace lifelong learning, assimilating new skill s isnt a source of fear or stress - its just another part of the career journey. Tech workers have long been accustomed to continuous upskilling as programming languages evolve and new software versions launch, but that cycle is accelerating. Staying current in a particular language or framework isnt enough for techies, and a narrow focus wont be enough for workers in other disciplines either.Learning shouldnt be limited to those hard skills, though. Even as automation and artificial intelligence expand their impact, soft skills - like communication, leadership, and team-building - wont be easily replicated by machines. The good news, even if you werent a fan of traditional schooling, is that learning can now happen on your schedule and on your terms. For example, affordable options exist for on-demand online courses you can take at your own pace, whenever, wherever, and however you choose. Explore Outside Your FunctionI also suggest people get curious and stretch in different dir ections, and that employers empower their workers to do so. People dont expect to stay in the same role indefinitely, and career paths arent linear anymore either. Being open to people moving between teams and functions lets employers accomplish two cost-saving measures at once retaining the institutional knowledge of longtime employees while leveraging their expertise to generate fresh, innovative ideas.Pursue a PassionAnother great way to hone your skills, old and new, is to apply them to something real, whether its publishing a blog, selling on Etsy, or creating a mobile app. Nonprofits always need volunteers to help with their websites, organize events, or attract new members.Having a side hustle or passion project is a great showcase for your soft skills, too, as you demonstrate your ability to initiate and follow through on projects, pitch your ideas, collaborate with others, and take ownership.Theres a quote I like that says, The best way to predict the future is to create it . This has never been more true than today, when the world of work is moving and changing so fast. Instead of feeling like they cant think beyond the latest urgent email chain, people can take charge of their careers by embracing learning.Shelley Osborne is head of learning and development at Udemy.

Brace yourself for even more changes to your Gmail

Brace yourself for even more changes to your GmailBrace yourself for even more changes to your GmailJust recently, we were graced with changes to our Gmails when the G Suite team created ways for us to download emailles, undo and redo actions, and even strikethrough words in the text of our homilies. And on Jan. 29, Google announced yet another update to the email platform, this time on mobile. The Gmail mobile app is getting an overhaul to match Googles custom Material theme already, Gmail, Drive, Calendar and other Google web experiences have been updated to reflect Googles new branding as a family of products. The new Gmail redesign will be available to Android andiOS users.Aesthetically, the update means a lot more clarity, like on the web. In essence, there will be fewer red touches and more crisp whiteness as we check our emails every day.But beyond the overall look, Google is also adding cool new functions to make our mobile experience easier. Heres a preview of what their engi neers have in store.Viewing attachmentsNow, on the web, theres no need to open an email and scroll to the attachment to open it. We can simply click on the attachment icon below a messages subject line in our general inbox to see whatever photo or document has been attached. But on mobile, weve had no such luck - until now. The latest update to Gmails mobile app makes it so that we can quickly view attachments- like photos- without opening or scrolling through the conversation, according to Google.Switching accountsMany of us have more than one Gmail account at this point, and it can be tedious to keep up with them all. But Google is here to help. The redesign includes a way to more easily switch between accounts, so youll be answering work emails seconds after responding to photos of your nieces third birthday party.WarningsWe all know there are a lot of bad actors out there. Thankfully, Google has started flagging phish-y messages for us on the web, and now itll do the same on mo bile. Just look for a big red banner at the top of the email - that means danger.

Waste House an Example of Sustainable Building

Waste House an Example of Sustainable Building Waste House an Example of Sustainable Building Waste House an Example of Sustainable BuildingThere are quite a few people in Brighton, England, who will tell you, There is no such thing as welcheste, just stuff in the wrong place. Duncan Baker-Brown, a senior lecturer and architect at the University of Brightons Faculty of Arts, has set out to test that idea. The test bed is the Brighton Waste House, which officially opened on June 10, 2014. It is the first permanent building in the U.K. to be constructed from waste, surplus material, and discarded plastic. In a sense, the Waste House is the descendant of an earlier sustainable building project carried out for Britains Channel 4 in 2008. Baker-Brown, who is also senior architect at BBM Sustainable Design, an architecture firm located in Cooksbridge, England, designed a prefabricated house out of organic materials such as timber, straw, grasses, hemp, and paper.Construction was filmed ove r six days, and at the end of each day Channel 4 broadcast a one-hour recap. The project was a special version of a regular program hosted by Kevin McCloud called Grand Designs, and so Baker-Browns design became known as the House that Kevin Built. The house stood for a few days on the site where it was built in East London. Baker-Brown had planned to rebuild the house at the University of Brighton, where he teaches. He saw it as a project to give his students practical experience, but the plan didnt work out. He decided instead to build an experimental building using materials that other people throw away.Building the Brighton Waste House. Image BBM Sustainable DesignBefore it was over, the project involved more than 275 students, most of them from the nearby City College Brighton and Hove, where the curriculum includes instruction in construction trades. Volunteers from Freegle UK, an online exchange for unwanted items, managed to source 20,000 plastic single-use toothbrushes from a sustainable cabin service company at Gatwick Airport. DVD cases were being discarded by a chain of movie rental shops, and the group was able to obtain about 10,000 of them.About half of them went into the Waste House. Wood came from various sources, including damaged new stock from a retailer and residents sheds. Many of the collected waste materials, including the toothbrushes and denim from cut-off jeans, went into specially designed spaces in the walls, where they will be monitored for their insulative properties. The 2,000 carpet tiles that titelbild the outside of the house, including colorful ones laminated with plastic bags, are what Baker Brown calls a rain screen cladding system. They serve to keep the weather off the material behind them.According to Brown, All unusual materials in external walls are being monitored with electrical sensors measuring levels of condensation, temperature, etc. Data is sent to a Ph.D. students computer, which is collecting data daily. If a wa ll begins to fail we will whip out the offending material and try something else, Brown says. It is a real live research project that University of Brighton academics and students and other interested parties will be able to research and develop ideas from. View the current and past issues of Mechanical Engineering. For Further Discussion If a wall begins to fail we will whip out the offending material and try something else.Duncan Baker-Brown, BBM Sustainable Design

These are 20 things you need to master before you turn 40

These are 20 things you need to master before you turn 40 These are 20 things you need to master before you turn 40 No one ever really feels like a “grown-up.” But if you’re approaching 40, well, you are one.And it’s high time you refined some crucial life skills, from staying healthy to saving money.Below, we’ve listed 20 skills you should master before you enter your 40s.NegotiatingIf the thought of getting into a debate with your boss over how much money you deserve makes you nauseated, you’re not alone. It helps to both research and practice, as much as you can stand. If you’re negotiating your salary, the best strategy both for getting what you want and still coming off as friendly is to  ask for a range  including and above your target number. For example, if you’re aiming for a $100,000 salary, you’d suggest a $100,000 to $120,000 salary.Another trick is to frame your proposal in terms of  what you’re giving the other person  as opposed to what they’re losing. So instead of saying, “I want $10,000 for my car,” you’d say, “I’ll give you my car for $10,000.”Es tablishing a regular sleep scheduleWe know it’s hard to hear, but it’s helpful to wake up at the same time every day - even on weekends. If you oversleep for even a few days,  experts say  you risk resetting your body clock to a different cycle, so you’ll start getting tired later in the day.On a related note: Experts also  advise against hitting “snooze”  and going back to sleep when your alarm goes off in the morning. Instead, hit the snooze button once and use the time until your alarm goes off again to turn on a lamp and do some light stretching.Making small talk at partiesChances are good that, if you’re feeling awkward about chatting with a bunch of impressive people you’ve never met, other people are feeling the same way.But as Marjorie Gubelmann, CEO of Vie Luxe,  told Oprah.com: “Even if you won’t know anyone and you’re feeling intimidated, you must go.  Do not stay home. So many people are afraid that no one will talk to them and they’ll leave feelin g awful - but has that ever happened to you?”One solid way to  improve your small-talk skills- and alleviate some of the pressure you feel - is simply to demonstrate interest in your conversation partner. Ask the person questions, let them talk about themselves, and allow them to teach you something.Finding and sticking to an exercise routine you enjoyA professor of behavioral medicine told  The New York Times  that research suggests people who dislike or feel inept at their workouts are unlikely to continue. So experiment and find an activity you really love, whether that’s spinning, Zumba, or weightlifting.Remember: In your 30s, you start  losing muscle mass, so it’s especially important to exercise at this time.Finding your career ‘sweet spot’Brian Fetherstonhaugh, worldwide chief talent officer at The Ogilvy Group,  writes on TIME.com: “Your career sweet spot is the intersection of three things: what you’re good at, what you love to do, and what the world values .”He says you should “use your 30s to test out hypotheses,” like whether you’re skilled enough in one area to make a career of it.Saving for retirementYour golden years are inching ever closer - and you’ll want to be prepared to enjoy them.As Business Insider’s  Lauren Lyons Cole reported, by the time you’re 40, you should have saved about three times your annual salary.Investing your money can grow your savings exponentially - without you having to do much of anything. In fact, Lyons Cole, who is a CFP, reported that “missing out on stock market growth spurts is actually  riskier than not investing at all.” Investing in relationships On a  Reddit thread  about lingering regrets people have from their 30s, multiple people posted about not spending enough time with their family. For example,  mustlovecash writes  that they regret “not spending more time with my parents â€" walking, talking, travelling â€" while they were still young enough to actively enjoy it” and “ever, ever choosing work time or personal time over spending time with my wife and children. Children grow quickly, and leave home quickly, and the spouse who remains with you will again become the closest and most important person in your life.” Indeed, according to the Harvard Study of Adult Development,  good relationships  keep us not only happy, but healthy as well. Interestingly, the study found that quality of relationships is more meaningful than quantity once you hit 30. Saying ‘no’ to people There’s an entire  Quora thread  dedicated to learning how to say “no,” where  Eva Glasrud writes, “we routinely overestimate the cost of saying ‘no.'” According to Glasrud, the best way to muster up the confidence to turn down a request is to recognize that “[t]here are some things you can never have back. Your time, your health, your virtue, your life. “Don’t mess around with those things. It’s fine for people to ask - most likely, in their mind, they’re trying to help introduce you to a great person or opportunity or meaningful cause. And it’s just as fine for you to say ‘no.'” In some cases, you can even  say “no” to your boss- sort of. According to national workplace expert Lynn Taylor, if your boss presents you with a new assignment and you’re already overloaded, you might respond with: “I would be happy to do that project, but what that could mean is that [whatever other project you’re working on] will have to be put off until tomorrow, because I was actually going to spend the next three hours finishing that proposal. Would you like me to put that off?” Keeping a clutter-free home If you’re looking to start de-cluttering, there’s a whole movement to support you, inspired by Marie Kondo’s “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” The process starts with a tidying “marathon,” in which you keep only those items that “spark joy” - and get rid of everything else. As Business Insider’s  Erin Brodwin reported, clutter can be a source of stress for some individuals and families. Then again, people tend to be more creative in messy environments - so if you aren’t feeling motivated to re-organize your entire office space this second, that’s probably okay, too. Writing on Quora, Vishwa Sharan advises 30-somethings to develop hobbies. People “forget that there is a beautiful life outside of their work,” Sharan says, and it’s important to find non-work activities you can pursue for the rest of your life. If you’re looking for ideas, check out this list of  hobbies that successful people practice in their spare time, from bridge (Bill Gates) to playing the ukulele (Warren Buffett). Making new friends In case you haven’t heard, it’s not so easy to find BFFs once you’re off a college campus. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible - in fact, there are plenty of science-backed strategies for  forging friendships in adulthood. One way is simply to do activities you enjoy so that you meet a steady stream of people with similar interests. Another way is to make yourself a little bit vulnerable: Exchanging confidences as a relationship progresses can make two people feel closer. As the late psychoanalyst Hedda Bolgar  told Oprah.com  when she was 103 years old and still practicing: “It’s important to be part of a community!” Failing - and getting back up again Over on Quora, Mragank Yadav says it’s important that 20-somethings learn how to fail, and more importantly, how to get back up again: “Failing comes naturally. Rising up again is something that needs to be [inculcated].” Yadav’s insight applies just as well to people in their 30s. Take a tip from now  super-successful figures, like Paul Allen and Oprah Winfrey, all of whom learned from multiple professional failures. Managing stress Living in a chronic state of stress and exhaustion can take its toll on you physically, mentally, and emotionally, and if brought on by work it can lead to  job burnout. You won’t make it that far in your career if you don’t pick up some strategies for  managing stress- even seemingly simple strategies like listening to music and exercising can help. Lifelong learning The fact that it may have been … a few years since you’ve set foot in a classroom doesn’t mean you should stop learning. And don’t limit yourself to subjects that would have an obvious impact on your career. After dropping out of college, Steve Jobs still audited the occasional class, and one course he took on  calligraphy was a huge influence on him  and inspired “the wonderful typography” personal computers have today. Proper time management is a skill you should have down by the time you hit 30, says  Barry S. Saltzman, a business-strategy expert who is the CEO of Saltzman Enterprise Group. So for 39-year-olds, it should be a given. You may get away with being all over the place as an intern, but it’s not cute when you’re leading the team and you can’t get your own act together. Time is money, Saltzman points out, and no company will be happy with needlessly wasted money: “Learning by 30 what makes you efficient is important to professional development, and beyond that, improved efficiency makes you look a lot better in the eyes of your superiors.” Cooking “Have you ever truly figured out how to cook?”  asks Sachin Shubhamon a Quora thread about important things to do in your 20s. As in, maybe you can feed yourself and your family with spaghetti and omelets, but what would you serve at a fancy dinner party? Sign up for a course and learn at least one dish so you can impress guests with your culinary expertise. Knowing your personal values Don’t let other people define happiness and success for you. On Quora,  Anna Lundberg writes: “The number one priority at this stage [30 years old] is getting clarity on what your priorities actually are! “A great way to do this is to define your personal values, getting to a list of your top three is ideal. Then ask yourself if these values are really reflected in your career and your lifestyle today. If not, you can go about setting goals that are aligned with those values, and then creating an action plan to achieve those goals.” You can also take a tip from Stephen Covey, author of the bestseller “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” and craft a  personal mission statement. It’s similar to a company mission statement, except it’s just for you. Covey wrote: “It focuses on what you want to be (character) and to do (contributions and achievements) and on the values or principles upon which being and doing are based.” Selling yourself Once you understand your own career vision, you must figure out how you will explain it to others. “Sharing that you’re a copywriter or that you work in finance is fine and dandy, but it doesn’t make you stand out or inspire people to want to ask you follow-up questions,” says Michelle Ward, a  creative career coach  and coauthor of “The Declaration of You!“ Instead, when people inquire about what you do, answer with your “what,” “who,” and “how.” Don’t be afraid to mention what you’re passionate about, the types of people you help, and what you do for them specifically, she says. When Ward introduces herself, she tells people that she offers dream-career guidance for creative women. “That way, the person listening can connect with what I’m saying or introduce me to any creative women they know who are looking for dream-career guidance,” she says. Being happy with what you have “If you are content with what you have, you will have a happier life,”says Robert Walker  on a Quora thread about things to do at 30 to benefit yourself later on. That’s especially true in the relationships domain. “The Gratitude Diaries” author Janice Kaplan found that simply saying “thank you” to her husband  breathed new life into their marriage. And psychologists have found that couples who express gratitude toward each other are  more likely to stay together. Forgiving yourself for your mistakes “Forgive yourself your mistakes. We all make plenty of them. Don’t dwell on the errors of the past - learn from them, let them go, and move ahead,” writes Liz Palmer in a since-deleted Quora post. In “The Happiness Track,” Emma Seppala, science director of Stanford’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, argues that self-compassion is a  key component of success. If you’re kind to yourself when you fail, you have a chance at learning from your mistakes and doing better next time. She recommends a simple strategy for exercising self-compassion: Treat yourself as you would treat a colleague or friend who has failed. This article was originally published on Business Insider.

HUMINT Specialist (MOS 0211)

HUMINT Specialist (MOS 0211) Counter Intelligence/HUMINT Specialist (MOS 0211) The Marine Corps Intelligence Community is a unique group of Marines who work closely with other intelligence assets in the field.  As a Human Intelligence Specialist, you can also be tasked to engage in counterintelligence to identify and de-escalate the threat of hostile combatants and intelligence organizations.  The Marines who join this military occupational specialty (MOS) can do so from any other MOS with a lateral move.  There is a relaxed uniform appearance allowing for beards and less than military grooming standards.  Counter Intelligence (CI) and Human Intelligence Specialists (HUMINT) go undercover to find information that is helpful to their fellow Marines as well as can save the lives of Americans overseas and at home. CI/HUMINT specialists are involved in all facets of planning and conducting CI and human intelligence operations and activities. Definitions of Counter Intelligence and Human Intelligence Counter Intelligence includes organized activity of an intelligence service designed to block an enemys sources of information, to deceive the enemy, to prevent sabotage, and to gather political and military information.  Counter Intelligence officers scan for people or enemy agencies engaged in espionage,  sabotage, subversion, or terrorism. Human Intelligence is  defined  as any information that can be gathered from  human  sources. The National Clandestine Service is the branch of the  CIA  responsible for the collection of  HUMINT. HUMINT activities are designed to obtain intelligence information using human beings as both sources and collectors. CI/HUMINT specialists must learn to be adept in both CI / HUMINT and must grow to have a working knowledge of the organizations, operations, and techniques employed by foreign intelligence services and terrorist organizations. HUMINT is gathered by interrogation, debriefing, and screening. Many 0211s will specialize in a foreign language or use interpreters in deployed to areas that do not speak the language of the Marines. With this skill set of language, they may, in turn, exploit foreign language documents and recordings. MOS 0211s when deployed must become familiar with the area, the customs and traditions of its people, and the infrastructure of a foreign force. CI/HUMINT specialists share and obtain the information by special automated databases, interview/interrogation techniques, liaison, specialized CI techniques, technical support measures, investigative photography, and reporting-writing techniques, to name a few methods.  The information the 0211 obtains is vital to the planning and mission of air, ground, and special operations troops military-wide. Job Requirements To lateral transfer from your current MOS into the MOS0211, you must be a U.S.citizen, 21 years of age, a volunteer, and be the rank of corporal or sergeant. Staff sergeants may apply for a lateral move; however, must have less than one-year time in grade and a waiver.   Marines must pass an interview to become recommended to join the MOS 0211  by a screening board of CI/HUMINT personnel as well as a polygraph test. ASVAB scores must also be high. Applicants must possess a GT score of 110 or higher. Must take the Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) test and be willing to undergo language training. Marines who can meet the minimum standard Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) score ( 2/2 or better) for a language may be excluded from the DLAB requirement. A foreign language capability is not required for active duty 0211 MOS. Reserve Marines with a foreign language capability verified by DLPT scores, desiring a lateral move into the 0211 MOS should have completed language training prior to affecting the lateral move. Prior to entry into Defense Language Institute (DLI), Marines must have sufficient obligated service to allow 24 months remaining upon graduation. You must pass a Special Background Investigation and be eligible for a top-secret  security clearance and access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) predicated upon a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) Application for the SSBI must be submitted prior to attendance of the MAGTF Counterintelligence/HUMINT Course at NMITC, Dam Neck, VA. Marine must complete the Nelson-Denney examination or Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) examination at a base education center or similarly accredited education establishment and achieve a minimum score of 10. Prior to entry into the MOS 0211 Training Course, The Marine must have sufficient obligated service to allow 36 months remaining upon graduation. Then the Marine must complete the MAGTF CI/HUMINT Course, Navy Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center (NMITC), in Dam Neck, VA.

Things to Avoid Writing in a Resignation Letter

Things to Avoid Writing in a Resignation Letter Things to Avoid Writing in a Resignation Letter When you move to a new job, common practice is to hand in a resignation letter to your current job first. You may wonder what should and shouldn’t make it into your letter. Does it matter? After all, you won’t be working for the company anymore. And when people leave under less-than-ideal circumstances, they throw caution to the wind and tell bosses what they think. But you should pay attention to your letter’s content for several reasons: You’ll need a reference from your boss to hand to your new employer.Word of negative attitudes can spread, especially in fields where people are well-networked.You could find yourself working at the company again if better opportunities arise or a counter-offer is made. So what should you exclude from your resignation letter to avoid burning bridges? Important: always keep your letter of resignation professional. The easiest way to answer that question is to consider the tone. Like any other employment document on file with your current company (cover letters, resumes, thank-you letters, etc.), the language should always reflect professionalism. Moreover, your tone should be positive. For a smooth departure free of negative fallout, avoid the following when writing a resignation letter. A Lengthy Explanation of Why Youre Leaving It’s tempting to give a long list of reasons you became disgruntled with your current job. However, a resignation letter is not the vehicle for doing this. You can speak with someone face-to-face and reveal frustrations during your exit interview. Reasons You Hated Your Job So Much Don’t project bitterness; it suggests you enjoy holding grudges. Mention positive aspects of your current job and what you learned â€" even if you have to be vague. When your boss knows you had problems in your job, but you don’t raise them in your letter, you’ll earn respect through your professional approach. Negative Comments About Your Boss Your resignation letter is not the right place to get personal about others, no matter how incompetent they were. Remember, your letter will probably be kept on file even if your current boss leaves. If you come back someday, you dont want your written words to show you in a bad light. Criticism of Your Peers Leave other people out. A letter of resignation focuses on you, not your colleagues. Their behavior may have played a part in your decision to leave, but playing the blame game makes you look like a weak team player. Inappropriate Language That means no obscenities or put-downs of any kind. Language deemed inappropriate for a workplace conversation must be kept out of a resignation letter. It seems obvious, but youll be surprised at the language people include when emotions are running high. Finally, bear in mind your letter is going into your employment file. So future employers could read it. Don’t jeopardize opportunities through an offensive document on record. Unnecessary Information on Career Plans This doesnt concern your current employer. You dont have to mention which company youre joining, and you certainly dont have to mention your new salary or benefits package. The letter should be brief and to the point, so these are unnecessary details. It should only state when you are leaving and acknowledge the part your current job played in your career advancement. Overly Emotional Sentiments If you’re leaving despite a good working relationship with your boss and colleagues, don’t get over-emotional in your letter. Save personal sentiments about your work experience with colleagues and mentors for a face-to-face chat. Again, it comes down to a professional outlook to keeping your records free from anything that raises eyebrows. Threats of Retribution Threats are an absolute no-no. Yes, negative actions by others can force resignations. And perhaps those actions had far-reaching effects on your career or reputation. But hinting at revenge will cause more harm than good. If you don’t control your emotions, and you go all-out with your threats, you could find yourself in serious trouble. That’s one black mark on your career that can take years to erase. Spelling and Grammar Errors An error-filled letter goes to prove you’ve lost motivation and your departure is the right decision. A short, amicable resignation letter leaves little chance of grammar and spelling errors. Conclusion Resignations are part of everyone’s career, and you may go through several during your professional life. The rule of thumb when writing a resignation letter is be professional. Remember, what you write, and your attitude during the process can affect future job prospects. If you need to write a good letter, check out these resignation letter templates. They’ll help you craft a suitable letter that protects your name and reputation as you take the next steps on your career path.

5 Tips for Writing a Resume Tailored to Fit a Legal Job Posting

5 Tips for Writing a Resume Tailored to Fit a Legal Job Posting 5 Tips for Writing a Resume Tailored to Fit a Legal Job Posting When it comes to applying for legal positions, a single, stock resume isn’t enough. Positions at law firms and companies can be very specialized. Your resume should be, too.   So when it’s time to move on to a new legal job, the first step is to update and adjust your resume for each position you apply to. These five tips for writing a resume tailored to fit a legal job posting can help you get noticed at the outset of the hiring process. 1. Lean heavily on certain specialized skills and experience. Rather than overwhelm your potential employer with your entire list of credentials, cater to areas of the target firm’s specialization. For example, if you’re applying for a senior paralegal job at a firm working primarily in civil litigation, be sure to expand on your experience working with a legal team to manage eDiscovery. Appropriately balance the weight of your varied areas of experience, emphasizing what most pertains to the position you’re seeking. 2. Do your research and craft the language of each resume accordingly. Before you customize a resume for a particular job, learn more about the place where you hope to work. Is there an “About” section or mission statement on the firm or company’s website? Or do you have a contact in your professional network whom you can tap for insights? The goal is for the employer to see as the ideal candidate because of the fit between your career aspirations and and the organization’s mission. 3. Get specific with concrete numbers and data. Don’t just list the years that you worked on this or that. Paint a clearer picture by including additional details in your resume such as, “Conducted case history research for 55 immigration law cases over three years.” 4. Showcase your knowledge of recent regulatory changes and industry trends. In a changing regulatory environment, legal professionals should remain current with legal industry trends and compliance requirements. When detailing recent work experience on your resume, try to highlight a situation that dealt with a recent change as it applies to the position you’re seeking so it’s easier for the potential employer to notice you’re on top of the latest developments. 5. Don't bother with an “Objective.” Although it’s a ubiquitous part of most general resumes, an “Objective” section isn't obligatory for legal resumes. Instead, write a succinct summary of qualifications at the beginning of the resume, perhaps as bullet points. Remember to stick to skills and expertise while avoiding overlap with your experience section. Resume experts could help make sure your resume isn’t stylistically outdated. Keep in mind that by following these tips for writing a resume, you may end up with several very different-looking resumes. Make sure they are well organized and readily accessible so that when calls for interviews start coming in, you can review specifics and prepare accordingly. What are your top tips for writing a resume? How to Adapt to Rapid Change at Work

How to Adapt to Rapid Change at Work How to Adapt to Rapid Change at Work How to Adapt to Rapid Change at Work Change is constant. Here's how you can you strengthen your ability to handle it. [TWEET] Change is a fact of life and work, to a certain extent. As a 10-year marketing professional, I know this much to be true: Change is constant. Marketing is no different from many industries and workplaces in this way. Consider healthcare, education, technology, manufacturing and entertainment, to name a handful - coping with change is a must. On change, Sanjay Dholakia, CMO of marketing-automation software company Marketo, likes to say that marketing has changed more in the last 5 years than the last 500, and will change even more in the next 5. When I was interviewing to work at my current company, I was told something I'll never forget: If you're not comfortable in a fast-paced environment, you probably shouldn't be working here; the one thing you can expect every day is change. 10 years later, I can calmly handle any curveball with grace, thanks to prolonged exposure to a dynamic atmosphere. My day-to-day experiences have taught me how to deal with change properly. I'm not fazed by it. So, how can you strengthen your ability to handleeven embraceworkplace and career change? Be curious. By being curious about what happens both inside and outside your building, across and beyond the organization, you can foster a healthy understanding of where change might/should come from. The best way to get this knowledge internally is to ask more questions. Talk to as many people as you can about their day-to-day work, throughout your entire organization. Survey a range of opinions to get a complete picture of what people might be actively striving to change or even just considering the potential sources where change could emerge. You'll want to be asking the right questions. For more on how to ask the right questions, see How to Sharpen Your Critical-Thinking Skills. Continue your education. Always be learning. I'm privileged in my job to learn something new every day. You should strive for the same. I try to take every opportunity I can to assimilate new knowledge with previous information and process the parallels or contradictions for a better grasp and broader awareness. Whether from a one-to-one conversation with a colleague, company training, online webinar, or professional association meeting, I'm always looking for a new perspective on what I do and all the terrific things other marketers are doing with new data, technology, tricks and methods for telling good old-fashioned stories. As a rule, you want to be continually challenging and adapting old ways of thinking while pushing yourself just beyond your comfort zone. This kind of consistent evaluation and reevaluation ensures your growth in the face of change. Cultivate a vision. In order to successfully learn how to deal with change, you need to know where you're going. What's the organizational goal? What are your personal goals? How do they fit together? What does raging success look like for your fans and your business? Vision is the mechanism to tie all these things together. If you know the vision, then you can accurately gauge the changes needed to get there and start doing more of the things that support the vision while ceasing those that hurt it. Alternatively, you can change the goal in light of the present circumstances if it becomes obsolete or inappropriate due to a market shift or major business pivot. Anticipate future trends. You don't have to be a futurist, but you at least want to be tuned in to what the experts are predicting about your industry. This knowledge can both help you make your own career pivot and protect your employer from a competitive or market ambush. Some ways to pick up on forecasts are: Reading business news, trade journals, blog posts, reports, books and other authoritative industry publications. Listening to podcasts and webinars. Attending seminars or conferences. Networking (the old-fashioned in-person kind AND the virtual kind via LinkedIn). By being proactive, youand potentially your organizationcan be out in front of the next big change wave when it hits, not wiped out by it. And weathering big storms of change is much harder when you don't see them coming. You risk more potential damage when you're unprepared to cope with change, hence the need for keeping a finger on the industry pulse. Have an internal locus of control. As cognitive psychologists would tell you, having an internal locus of control, where you take responsibility for your reaction to a given circumstance, as opposed to blaming outside factors (an external locus of control), is all-important. For example, when another person gets your coveted promotion or you lose a major customer, the person with an internal locus of control says, What can I do better to prevent this from happening in the future or generally improve myself or my situation? The person with the external locus of control says, I envy that person; the promotion should have been mine; or, It's not my fault that customer doesn't like us. There's nothing I could have done differently. The 'internal' person accepts responsibility to learn and grow from challenging circumstances. The 'external' person is resentful and dismissive, blames others, and is quick to deflect responsibility. You want to have the internal locus of control in order to learn how to deal with change in the healthiest manner. Remember: it ain't easy. Change is not always easy but it's not all bad, either. Acknowledging the occasional pain while having the right lens on the inevitable twists and turns can lead to a more enduring, happier work life. Remember, change is a fact, and welcoming the future with gusto is the appropriate response. Let TopResume help you write the next chapter of your career. Here's how.

Personal Courage and Conflict Resolution at Work

Personal Courage and Conflict Resolution at Work Personal Courage and Conflict Resolution at Work Practicing personal courage is necessary if you want to successfully resolve conflicts at work. It is much easier and much safer to ignore the necessary conflict and play ostrich. Unfortunately, unresolved conflict tends to escalate. It never really disappears because it simmers just below the surface. Think of water that is coming to a boil. It bubbles up in the pot sporadically and then finally reaches the boiling temperature. At that point, a full-blown rolling, constant boiling is seen on the surface of the water. Conflict behaves similarly. The water may seem calm, but every once in awhile, usually at the worst possible times, the conflict bubbles up to the surface once again. Unresolved conflict does not go away; unresolved conflict can turn into a full boil at any time. Many people are afraid of conflict resolution. They feel threatened by it because they may not get what they want if the other party gets what they want. Even in the best circumstances, conflict resolution is uncomfortable because people are usually unskilled at managing conflict. Finally, people can get hurt in a conflict and, at work, they are still expected to work together effectively every day. The Benefits of Conflict Resolution This centurys workplace makes conflict resolution more important, but also, more difficult. Team or work cell environments create more conflict as people with different opinions must choose to work together, often in close quarters. Empowering work environments, in which the traditional reliance on a manager to solve conflicts and make decisions, bring co-workers into more frequent conflict, as they must work issues out for themselves. Conflict resolution also: Causes people to listen to and consider different ideas.Enables people to increase their alternatives and potential paths. Results in increased participation and more ownership of and commitment to the decisions and goals of the group or person. The goal of the people or the team is not to eliminate conflict but to learn how to manage conflict constructively. Youve decided resolving the conflict is more important than all of the reasons why people avoid conflict. Here are tips to help you practice less scary, less intimidating, more effective and successful conflict resolution, with an individual or a team. Resolve the Conflict Create an environment that is conducive to successful conflict resolution. Quiet, private settings work the best. Agree prior to sitting down together that the purpose of the meeting is to resolve the conflict. When you make this agreement, all parties arrive prepared.Determine what outcomes youd like to see as a result of the discussion. A better working relationship? A better solution to the problem? Increased alternatives for successful projects? A broadened understanding of each persons needs and wants? Thoughtful solutions and outcomes are infinite if you are creative. Begin by allowing each party to express their point of view. The purpose of the exchange is to make sure both parties clearly understand the viewpoint of the other. Make sure each party ties their opinions to real performance data and other facts, where possible. This is not the time to discuss; it is the time to ask questions, clarify points for better understanding and truly hear the others viewpoint.Agree on the difference in the points of view. You must agree on the problem together to begin to search for a solution. Often problems are simply misunderstandings. Clarification can end the need for conflict resolution. Try to focus on the issues, not the personalities of the participants. Dont you each other as in, You always ... Explore and discuss potential solutions and alternatives. Try to focus on both your individual needs and wants and those of the other party. After all, if one party wins, that means the other party loses. People who feel as if they have lost, are not effective co-workers.They harbor resentment and may even sabotage your project or relationship. Make sure you discuss the positive and negative possibilities of each suggestion  before you reject any suggested solutions. Build a discussion that is positive and powerful for all parties. Agree on a plan that meets the needs of all parties and the organization. Agree on follow-up steps, as necessary, to make the plan work. Agree on what each person will do to solve the conflict. Set clear goals and know how you will measure success.Do what you agreed to do. With more experience in conflict resolution, you will grow more comfortable with conflict resolution. Thats a positive outcome for the workplace. It will foster idea generation, help people get along, minimize negative behaviors and promote the success of all in placing their attention where it belongs - on the customer.
